Astronomical Myth is a "picture language," imagery that articulates the qualities of cosmic intelligence expressing throughout the greater heavens and through our lives. We are not separate from the greater heavens, from the stars and planets around us, or from our beloved Earth, but are intimate parts of this dynamic, continually unfolding heavenly symphony. This entirety is our cosmic consciousness, the totality of our being. To explore the greater heavens and the heavenly cycles is to explore that which we are--our embracing consciousness and our spiritual evolution.

The stars would not be in the heavens
if we were meant to walk in darkness.

Please remember that the purpose of the Lunar Planner is to learn to live in the experiential awareness of the present. Although the material below can provide philosophical context for your personal experience, the New Moon is the ideal time to experientially "tune in" to get your personalized lunar month's theme. Then, consciously participate with the changing Lunar Phase Characteristics in the unfoldment of that theme in your daily life using the Lunar Calendar and Lunar Planner Introduction (links at the bottom).

The Aug 1, 2008 Total Solar Eclipse

This is the 47th solar eclipse in SAROS Series #126. There are 72 Eclipses in this SAROS Series, which started in 1179 A.D. and which continues through 2459 A.D.

Total solar eclipses occur near the center of a SAROS Series. The August 2008 total solar eclipse in mid-sidereal Cancer is the 8th out of 10 total solar eclipses occurring in this SAROS Series. The last Total Eclipse in this SAROS Series occurred on Jul 22, 1990 in early sidereal Cancer and the next will occur on Aug 12, 2026 in late sidereal Cancer.

The New Moon Total Eclipse

This is an eclipse Lunar Cycle, with a Total Solar Eclipse occurring on the New Moon of Aug 1, 2008 and a Partial Lunar Eclipse occurring on the Full Moon of Aug 16.

Generally, eclipse lunar cycles mark a time of shifting into a new octave in the lunar spiral of growth. They offer a time to resynchronize ourselves with the ever-changing cosmic currents supporting our evolutionary progression in consciousness.

Solar eclipses offer opportunity to redefine concepts of self and the roles we play, or how we articulate ourselves, in the world. They are about shifting octaves in the nature of our self-perception and self-expression. They often mark a new beginning, way of life, or new way of participating in life.

Lunar eclipses tend to be about releasing the emotional bonds within ourselves that reach out and glue us to involvements that are less than we truly want or deserve. They are about the emotional and experiential aspects of our relations with others and with the world--how we feel about and palpate life. Lunar eclipses provide opportunity for an emotional fresh start.

Our New Moon Solar Eclipse of Aug 1, 2008 resides in mid-sidereal Cancer and conjoins Asellus Aus, which along with Asellus Bor, create the ass of Cancer. Near by and of influence is the Praesepe star cluster of Cancer. Also conjoining is Quasar 1133+704 and Gianfar, both of northern Draco; and Pulsar CP0834 and Delta Hydra, which mark the brain of southern Hydra, the water serpent. This is also the exalted location of Jupiter in the sidereal zodiak, which inspires movement and expansion from stasis.

Cancer, commonly the crab, is also the Egyptian Scarabaeus, an image that articulates the theme of our emergence from darkness, dogma, and delusion, and our reawakening back to light. The Scarab is an appropriate mythical figure, as no one knows the exact time of the emergence of the beetle from its snuggle in the dung it collects, because it does not seem to follow any natural cycle in nature. This theme also applies to our individual emergence from the family nest or from the collective consciousness that we co-create.

Asellus Aus and Bor, the southern and northern stars that create the ass of the Crab are of being encrusted in antiquated patterns, personal and collective beliefs, and modalities of being that perpetuate stasis. Classically they are considered to be unfortunate stars with a somewhat stubborn nature. They can stimulate a desire to nourish, fortify and accumulate to such a degree that one can get self-consumed in their own pile of stuph'. However, our Total Solar Eclipse offers a release from their tenaciously sticky hold.

The Scarab is a symbol of regeneration, transformation and re-birth, of being self-created, or self-made, to rise from itself--hence the association with humanity's emergence form its own dung (darkness, dogma and delusion).

Praesepe embodies the essence of the Scarab / Cancer theme: emergence out of the antiquated dogmatic entrapments we had been living in (Asellus Bor and Aus), and our migration or new birth. Praesepe is of new beginnings, shedding old skins, skeletons, and cocoons. It is of emerging out of the frenetic confusion of mass consciousness; finding our new path and direction; leaving behind old dwellings and the structures of consciousness they represent; and getting out of our personal or collective dogma and the darkness it creates. As the crib or manger, Praesepe also articulates the protective and nurturing environment supporting our emergence process, our new birth. The issue here is about making the move.

Alignments with Praesepe may indicate a new dwelling place is at hand or that one is in order to find. As with the migration of bees from an old hive, before identifying their new direction, there can be frenetic confusion at first, a scattered sense and lack of direction before moving toward their new home. This is temporary and is part of intuiting the feeling for the right direction, much like turning in a complete circle to identify the way that feels right. Praesepe asks us to trust in our magnetic sense, on our inner compass, and to hone in on our new direction while honoring the inherent confusion of the emergence process.

Assellus and Praesepe can bring up the fear of letting go--a fear bound in our belief patterns and those of collective consciousness. They can bring our attention to the possibility of being lost in our own mental obscurations--in the reasons "why not" to go forward, why not to change--in the frenetic buzz of collective mass consciousness--in the entrapping dogmas of life, whether personal or collective. Praesepe asks us to step out of our limiting environments and structures of consciousness and to find new places fitting to our emerging new awareness; and this Total Eclipse offers the opportunity to do so.

Pulsars are rapidly rotating neutron stars that generate consistent and regular pulses of radiation. They were first discovered by the observation of their radio wavelengths. However they also emit optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray energies. Most pulsars are found to lie along the galactic plane. I consider them to be navigational beacons for soul; ever-beating reminders that can guide us in our evolutionary sojourn.

We can consider Pulsar CP0834 to be the brain of Hyrda. This pulsar does not lie along the galactic plane as most pulsars, and so may influence our biological personality workings and primordial response more so than being a guiding beacon for the soul. It may reinforce our repetitive, monotonous, subconscious patterns that perpetuate stasis--that part of ourselves that undermines our ability to change, but it can also make visible those patterns that we need to change, a constant reminder.

CP0834 has a fundamental frequency of 0.785075095881 Hz which translates to 6781.8Å Red and 3390.9Å Near UV in the light spectrum. This resonance engages physical behavioral and musculature patterns--literally our capacity to act in the physical as well as our brain's frontal lobe--which function, in part, is our capacity to see alternative paths and to move forward from the antiquated. This pulsar's harmonic also cross-resonates with Saturn's circumference harmonic, which can manifest as long standing behavioral patterns that perpetuate stasis or rigidity--hence our need to become consciously aware of our repetitive behavioral patterns and have the conscious deliberation to change.

The objects astronomers call Quasars are high-potency point-sources of energy found at extreme distances from our own galaxy. They radiate a power level greater than our galaxy and are believed to be the oldest and most distant objects ever detected. Generally, we can associate Quasars with an ancient and initiating creative power, one that is mysterious, elusive, but that inspires our exploration of alternatives not in our current realm of experience.

Northern Quasar 1133+704 of Draco also inspires us to create the space to explore the inner fears that tie us to the past and that keep us from living our heart's truth in the present, so we can emerge from antiquated and engrained neural-net patterns and establish new and alternative pathways.

Gianfar, Lambda Draco, on the tail of the Dragon, is the poisoned place and conjoins the stars of Hydra's head, a multifarious source of undermining. Gianfar is of neurological currents, specifically those emanating from "poisons of the heart" that manifest cellular patterns within ourselves that relentlessly destroy all we touch through endless battering of our courage, optimism, and strength--destroying us through sheer exhaustion. Here we are asked to realize how unresolved bitterness of the heart can perpetually avert us from the fulfillment we seek.

Jupiter's exaltation reveals that to overcome the poison place, any heart's bitterness, we must mobilize our greater spiritual truths and principles by physically integrating them through demonstrable action. It is only experientially-gained wisdom from living heart, not mere mental understanding, that creates the transmuting power to address such poisonous conditions and to eradicate the resultant cancerous growths within self--otherwise a mere combative approach simply antagonizes the onslaught. This Cancerian centre can also be indicative of excessive lymphatic and circulatory congestion and toxicity, indicating a requirement for physical fitness, movement, and purification of the lymph--our living water of life.

The Juno-Pluto Synodic Cycle

Synodic cycles are created when two (or more) planets align in thier orbits around the Sun. The synodic cycle theme, defined by the planets involved and the star alignments at the time, will unfold until the two planets align again, marking the completion of the synodic cycle and the beginning of the next one.

There are many synodic cycles with unique astrological themes occurring simultaneously creating a harmonic symphony of creative unfoldment in consciousness. Synodic cycles can be thought of as longer-term underlying currents, much like the backdrop chorus of a symphony, providing the underlying astrological context guiding our evolution.

Learn more about
Synodic Cycles & Synodic Astrology

Juno and Pluto start a new 4.5-year synodic cycle on the Gate of God in early sidereal Sagittarius on August 3. Pluto's extraordinarily significant presence on the Gate of God on the June 2008 Full Moon Solstice was presented in the June 3, 2008 Lunar Planner, so I will forego re-expounding upon the Gate of God and Pluto's significant role here.

Juno is the asteroid of covenant relationships, soul colleagues, and true lovers. In the astrological chart, Juno indicates the nature of the issues and opportunities in significant relations of all sorts: not only those that are of a personal nature but those of political leaders and nations of the world.

Mature Juno is diplomatic, tactful, cooperative, and mutually trusting. Mature Juno expresses with a sense of equality within self that provides the ability to draw true partners and those of equality into one's life. There is an acceptance of another's truth or opinion without need to challenge or debate. There is an ability to honor and support others in their own choices and decisions. Mature Juno expresses self-confidence in humbleness and without defense.

Immature Juno expresses as superiority / inferiority complexes, jealousy and results in relationships of inequality or non-compatibility. Issues arise such as competitiveness, defensiveness, lack of self-confidence, possessiveness, arrogance, unconscious manipulation of others; power struggles, contention, betrayal, bitterness, spitefulness, one-up-man-ship and standoffs. More on Juno.

This new Juno-Pluto 4.5-year cycle nests in the context of the Pluto-Solstice event and its presence on the Gate of God makes this next 4.5 years quite significant for relationships. First, we may find less-mature Juno-related issues being cracked wide open to be dealt with, demanding their resolution. Pluto will either dismantle those issues and allow passage into a new level of maturity, integrity and into a new realm of participation for those working with this process; or Pluto will dismantle relationships refusing to mature or that are simply not shifting into a higher order that is true to their purpose on Earth. Overall, this next few years should manifest as a an accelerated maturing process for relationships. This period may also result with balanced partnerships that are supporting our passage through our evolutionary transition emerging into a more prominent role on Earth.

Crescent Moon Phase Characteristics

Expanding on the Theme

Crescent Moon

The hours before the Crescent Moon provide a time when we relinquish patterns of the past that would limit our creative ability to expand on the lunar theme now unfolding. The Crescent Moon is the time when the sprouting seedling sloughs off its protective coat of the past and emerges in its new expression. As the Crescent Moon unfolds, the growing phase of the lunar cycle begins as we start to amalgamate our personal creativity with the original lunar theme.

M100 Spiral Galaxy in the Virgo Cluster

M100 Spiral Galaxy in the Virgo Cluster
Image Credit: Hubble, NASA and STScI

The Virgo Cluster has about 2000 member galaxies, in which our Local Supercluster (also called Virgo or Coma-Virgo Supercluster) resides.

This Crescent Moon occurs on August 4 in the first dew degrees of sidereal Virgo and conjoins Benatnasch of Ursa Major; Zavijava of Virgo; the Beta and Theta stars of Crateris, the Cup of Salvation; and the Supergiant Spiral Galaxy M100 in Coma Berenices.

Benatnasch, the Tail of the Bear of Ursa Major and one of the seven rays, is the old dictatorial and totalitarian stream of consciousness that was predominantly dominant when Earth's polar alignment was tilted (had fallen) furthest from the galactic plane in Earth's great precessional year (about 6000 years ago).

Benatnasch is of this old governing paradigm. It is of political-religious factions and of those who tend to act as manipulating and controlling god-heads. It is of those that perpetuate a dogmatic structure that keeps individuals from becoming self-responsible, evolving into their own self-mastery. It is of those who tend to tell others what is right for them and what they should do using propaganda rather than supporting others to make their own decisions in freedom. These are the self-proclaimed saviors of the world who try to amass their blind followers.

Zavijava is indicative of the blind followers, the innocent naive unquestioning people who get lured in by the manipulative and dramatic power plays functioning from this old totalitarian directive.

Southern Crateris, the Cup, underlies this shenanigan and embodies a greater fulfillment based on true spiritual principles waiting to be found, but which are obscured by the totalitarian manipulative power-plays of those spouting the enlightenment to lead humanity to freedom.

This location in the ecliptic is one that asks us to examine and discern whether we are blindly following self-proclaimed totalitarian authoritarian political-religious rulers and gurus and their propaganda or if we are seeking a deeper fulfillment based in and guided by true spiritual principles.

Moving across the five degree mark of sidereal Virgo the energies change significantly, from those manipulative and diversionary of late Leo and cuspal Virgo to the pure and spiritual of Virgo / Coma Berenices. This axis (5° Virgo Pisces, which is square to the galactic fixed axis of Earth's precessional cycle of the Holy Cross) is marked by our galaxy's polar axis. At this ecliptical longitude we find the magnificent spiral galaxy M100 in Coma Berenices, the Halo of the Virgin, as we enter the domain of our Super Galactic Center--the spiritual center of the heavens.

In the context of our Cancer / Scarab Lunar Theme, our Crescent Moon inspires us to leave behind and emerge from the thought patterns, propaganda and structures of mass-consciousness that perpetuate us as a disempowered sleeping heard of blind followers--to recognize our individuality and to expand upon it.

Uranus & Mars

Uranus Mars Opposition

Uranus and Mars oppose each other on August 6, creating a very potent dynamic. A Moon Mercury trigger occurs, with the two creating a Yod (Finger of God) to Uranus, thus the focus being one of revolution and radical change challenging our use of creative power.

Also in the mix is retrograde Neptune and the asteroid Ceres. Ceres and Mars also create a Yod to Neptune, with Mercury and Neptune in opposition.

First Quarter Moon Phase Characteristics

Initiate Action

First Quarter Moon

The First Quarter Moon of each lunar cycle draws an external stimulus to initiate action as we move from the inspirational quarter of the lunar cycle into the action quarter.

This First Quarter Moon occurs on August 8 in sidereal Libra.

Hours before First Quarter Moon, Juno returns direct from its retrograde and contributes to our "external stimulus to action." This marks the full commencement of the Juno-Earth Synodic Cycle that began on June 12, 2008. The theme of this Juno synodic cycle was defined by Ras Alhague, the head of Ophiuchus. Here we are motivated to participate from a place of self-mastery in our relations; and interactions in our relationships may add to create our challenge to act upon our unfolding lunar theme. This also marks a time of commencement for relationships--movement forward.

Our First Quarter Moon conjoins Zubenelgenubi in sidereal Libra. Zubenelgenubi and Zubeneschamali in modern illustrations are shown as the scales or balance of Libra. In a much older imaging however, these stars were the claws of the Scorpion--an image revealing a far greater understanding about our incarnational experience and purpose on Earth.

First Quarter Moon Chiron T-Square

Zubenelgenubi and Zubeneschamali are the karmic and dharmic seats for humanity, the former about our past experience and patterns of growth, and the latter about our future path of experience and growth, that which we have yet to do, our capacity, or duty in a sense, to do it differently--to grow and change.

Alignments with Zubenelgenubi, Libra's southern balance, or the Scorpion's southern claw, indicate a responsibility to address or complete any entrapping situations created in a previous incarnation--unfinished business, or simply entrapping patterns and scenarios in this life. Zubenelgenubi also marks Saturn's exalted location in the ecliptic--Saturn fittingly called the lord of karmic retribution.

In addition, the Moon creates a T-square with the Sun on the South Lunar Node and Chiron on the North Lunar Node. This dynamic makes our action quite clear. But let us look at this Chiron alignment first.

Chiron's New Synodic Cycle

Earth and Chiron exactly align (looking form the Sun) just after First Quarter Moon on Aug 10 in late sidereal Capricorn marking the start of a new year-long Chiron Synodic Cycle. As mentioned, looking from Earth, Chiron also conjoins the North Lunar Node while the Sun aligns with the South Lunar Node. This brings a strong magnetic focus to Chiron. Chiron lies a bit north of the ecliptic in the constellation of Aquarius, and this latter part of the sidereal sign of Capricorn is the overlap area of the two constellations (Cap and Aqu), which expands the rather self-focused quality of earlier Capricorn to one more embracing with concern and caring for our extended family members and friends.

Chiron is known to be associated with healing, and specifically with the discovery of new health and healing modalities. Chiron also serves as a bridge to cross from one place to another, typically between the realms of Uranus and Saturn--hence bringing new discoveries (Uranus) into the world of function and application (Saturn), and expanding upon that which is concretized and established to a radical, spontaneous, and unexpected exploration.

This synod residing at the same ecliptical location as the current orbital crossing points of the Moon's orbit and Earth's orbit (the lunar nodes), magnetically draws us to explore the new and unknown (Chiron North Node), to leave that which is visible, our old patterns of behavior, perceptions of self, and our current roles in the world (Sun South Node).

Earth and Chiron reside under the auspices of Delphinus, the Dolphin star system, which lies in the northern heavens over the Capricorn-Aquarius overlap, and they conjoin the principal star Sualocin, Alpha Delphinus.

Sualocin of Delphinus offers guidance for those willing to trust in greater forces than their personal efforts can generate alone. The Dolphins, an expression of angelic dominion, are guides for the wayward, as old salts know. They reveal the way to make safe passage to our destination, to our greater nourishment and fulfillment, provided we listen to and participate in the serendipity of life.

To experience in the serendipity of life requires we surrender the pre-occupations of reasoning mind, those of worry and our need to define and control, of what we "think" we "should" be doing. It instead requires us to be attentive to and trust any subtle impulses we may feel at any given moment--to move with the Divine Intelligence that permeates and fluidly guides our lives. Here lies the art of getting out of our own way to allow creative solutions that lead us from the conforming bounds of limited mind.

Thus, our new year-long Chiron Synodic Cycle asks that we allow ourselves to be led to new discoveries in our lives, to be led across a bridge, one we may not entirely see. The nature of the bridge, and the areas in our lives in which it forms, is of course unique to each person depending on the location of this alignment in our personal charts.

Returning to our First Quarter Moon T-square:
Lunar Node T-squares work like this. The south node alignments reveal our old patterns, those comfy-cozy old modes of behavior, while the north node alignments reveal a new direction to move, to bring the south node energetic through a new expression revealed by the north node. That which is squaring the nodes reveals an issue or stimulus. In this case the Moon is separating in square from the south node and approaching square to the north node, thus the issue in this case is serving as a emotional stimulus to take creative action--in concert with the very nature of the First Quarter Moon as well. (If the squaring object were separating from the north node and approaching the south node the issue would have the character of producing an inner need to change.)

It is not uncommon for the issue (that which is squaring the nodes) to grab our attention because the energy builds here as tension that needs to release like an arrow from a bow. So it is important to not lose site of goal by getting consumed in the issue. The goal is to move from the south node patterns to the new north node pathway. We must simply deal with the issue and make the move.

In this case, our First Quarter Zubenelgenubi Moon is the issue (our stimulus to action) at hand. Thus the stimulus of this T-square (and of the First Quarter Moon) has to do with our existing patterns of growth, perhaps entrapments, the reasons why we may feel stuck, our engrained existing life scenarios, even long-standing karmic scenarios and perhaps our existing relationships (remember Juno turning direct just before First Quarter). This arising "issue" creates an emotional tension to take action.

The action thus becomes clear by the lunar nodal axis--to take the steps at hand that will move our exisiting, sense of self, who we "think" we are, or our role in the world and to cross an emotional bridge we are currently facing. However, we must trust that we will be guided (Delphinus), provided we take the action first (First Quarter Moon). This is much like needing to take a step off a shear drop into an apparent abyss with a foot-bridge only appearing after the step is taken.

Gibbous Moon Phase Characteristics

Attraction & Involvement

Eagle Nebula

Gibbous Moon

The 24-hour period just before the Gibbous Moon is a time of perseverance, of pushing through in the midst of the action quarter of the lunar cycle. The Gibbous Moon is when the pressure releases and we enter the Pollinating Phase of the lunar cycle, which begins a social and communicative time of magnetic attraction.

This Gibbous Moon occurs on Aug 12 in sidereal Sag and conjoins the hand, Meridionalis of Sag, and the bow, Kaus Aus and Bor, of the Zen Archer. Also conjoining is Alpha Telescopium; and the SGR XR-4, X-ray source / Black Hole in the Globular Cluster NGC6624.

This point in the ecliptic is about our Zen stance, how to hit the target of our ideals, aspirations and dreams. This is an all or nothing deal. Athletes know the principle of the Zen archer's bow well. To achieve one's goals, whether a golfer, pole-vaulter, billiards player, skier, archer, or martial artist, the stance or form one holds is essential. Only if the archer is holding the bow as if it is an integrated part of the body will the arrow hit the target. Only will the skier be able to take on the most challenging of slopes if the skies are felt as extensions of one's legs, firmly and gracefully moving in concert with the entire body. Only will the billiards player make the pocket if the entire body stance is solid, with the cue nesting in a properly formed bridge made by the hand. Simply this can be called our Zen, a whole body form or stance requiring all of our focused awareness expressed throughout our entire being.

The SGR XR-4 Globular Cluster serves us to gather our Chi (Xi), while Alpha Telescopium indicates our need to have long-range, long-term and undaunted vision. Alpha Telescopium requires we look past or through everything around us and see only our target.

North of the Zen Archer's Bow is the Eagle Nebula M16 in Serpens. This is close-up part of M16. "Appearing like a winged fairy-tale creature poised on a pedestal, this object is actually a billowing tower of cold gas and dust rising from a stellar nursery called the Eagle Nebula. The soaring tower is 9.5 light-years or about 57 trillion miles high, about twice the distance from our Sun to the next nearest star." (Hubble)

Our Sag Gibbous Moon motivates us into a Zen focus and can draw those together of similar focus as well as promote the desire for interaction and exploration about our long-range vision, ideals, and strategies to achieve our goals.

Full Moon

The Full Moon marks the culmination point in the lunar cycle, the climax, the point of excitement and celebration. The hours leading up to the Full Moon provide a time of "vision and enthusiasm." The time just after Full Moon is a one of "realization of the lunar month's theme," a time to kick back and relax, to allow our realizations to surface in consciousness.

On Aug 15, hours before the Full Moon Partial Lunar Eclipse of Aug 16, Earth and Neptune align, looking from the Sun, in late sidereal Capricorn marking the start of a new year-long Neptune Synodic Cycle. As the Moon then moves into alignment with the Sun, Earth and Neptune, it produces a Partial Lunar Eclipse, the last eclipse of 2008.

Note: In most places, the festive Full Moon eve occurs on Aug 15.

Lunar eclipses tend to be about releasing the emotional bonds within ourselves that reach out and glue us to involvements that are less than we truly want or deserve. They are about the emotional and experiential aspects of our relations with others and with the world--how we feel about and palpate life. Lunar eclipses provide opportunity for an emotional release, a fresh start.

This Lunar eclipse is visible primarily from the eastern hemisphere and eastern South America (S. America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Aus.).

Lunar Eclipse info:
http://www.mreclipse.com/Special/LEnext.html

Earth, the Full Moon eclipse and Neptune conjoin Nashira of Capricorn; Beta Gruis; Kitalpha Equulei; Sadalsuud of Aquarius and Deneb Algedi, the tail of the fish-goat, which marks the finish of sidereal Capricorn.

This is an expressive and articulate area of the zodiak, with gregarious and loquacious qualities. Nashira is of good news, especially regarding legalities, business dealings, and constitutional matters, as well as sanctioned matters of the soul. Beta Gruis inspires the verbal expression of our wisdom. As the stork, Gruis is carrier of bodies of knowledge, information, and news associated with new life and new beginnings. Prominent alignments with Beta Gruis and Nashira are exemplary of carriers of good tidings associated with legalities.

The last decan of Capricorn is of libraries, courts, publishing houses, literary agencies, or where any legalities are formulated, agreed upon and concretized. Sadalsuud, Beta Aquarius, the luckiest, offers a fortuitous influence in the kingdom of human affairs. Kitapha is the alpha star of the little foal. According to R.H. Allen, some mythologists associate Equulei to Celeris, the brother of Pegasus, presented by Mercury to Castor; or Cyllarus, given to Pollux by Juno; or the creature struck by Neptune's trident when contesting with Minerva for superiority. Kitapha and the little foal bring a quality of lightness, swiftness and vigor to the communicative and fortuitous nature of the last few degrees of sidereal Capricorn.

Thus our Neptune Full Moon eclipse (and this new year-long Earth-Neptune synodic cycle) should stimulate lively discussion and brainstorming about, and bring fortuitous news regarding, our dreams, creative visions, and ideals; and also about any projects and pursuits incorporating the media, performing, entertainment, and the visual arts. Mars is exalted at this zodikal location, which reveals a highly creative process in action--an enthusiastic motivating force. Our Neptune Full Moon eclipse acts as a dissolving force upon emotional illusions, providing an emotional fresh start.

Vesta Venus & Jupiter Grand Trine
Mars Pluto Square
Sun Leo

Several events occur on August 16-17. Venus, Vesta and Jupiter create a Grand Trine. Mars approaches square to Pluto with a lunar trigger, and the Sun moves into Sidereal Leo (Aug 17).

The most dramatic and emotional alignment is the Mars Pluto square. If frustration, anger or violent emotions have been building during the few days leading into this event, the opportunity is to realize that independent of what one may project their frustration upon, the real issue is that the frustration or anger is about our own inability to fulfill our desires by the use of raw power alone. The few days leading into this alignment generates a building tension creating an inner need to change any forceful, aggressive, impulsive, impatient, reckless, self-centered, exploitative, dominating or controlling tendencies that may be driving the use of our creative power.

The Grand Trine, more of a subtle energetic underlying the Mars Pluto tension, creates an open door for those with a willingness to mobilize and expand from clarity and focus of heart.

The Ceres-Varuna Synodic Cycle

The asteroid Ceres and Varuna, one of recently discovered planets, start a new synodic cycle, also on Aug 17, conjoining Castor and Wasat of Gemini. This cycle continues through mid-2013.

Ceres is of concern and caring for the Earth and our environment, is mothering in nature, and of the womb. Varuna was discovered in earlier sidereal Gemini in 2000, thus its influence is just starting to be experientially varified. Mythically however, Varuna is said to uphold cosmic law (not man's law), to establish a path of order out of chaos, and to be a protector of people, although working inconspicuously behind the scenes. If this holds true, Ceres and Varuna would seem to make a synergistic pairing.

Castor and Wasat bring the pieces together through mutual cooperation. Castor is the link and liaison, and Wasat establishes bonds of strength. This several year synodic cycle may bring a focus, specifically though cooperation in business and commerce, and through the coordination of people and resources, to reestablish harmony in our environment. On a personal level this cycle may influence our need to establish a new order in our personal environments, a relationship with our surroundings that is more nourishing to self and connected to Earth and to the land.

Disseminating Moon Phase Characteristics

Manifestation & Demonstration

Disseminating Moon

The hours leading up to the Disseminating Moon generally is an accelerated and busy time of last minute preparation that leads into the birth point in the lunar cycle, the time of bearing the fruit of the cycle, of claiming its gift.

Our Manifesting Moon of Aug 20 resides in sidereal Pisces and conjoins Alderamin of Cepheus and Alpheratz of Andromeda.

Perseus and Andromeda - Giorgio Vasari

Perseus and Andromeda by Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574) Oil on Slate. On display at Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. Some critics think this work to be cluttered by other people in the water, confusing the theme of the chained princess. I however think it nicely depicts Andromeda's almost fatal entrapment in Cetus--the technobureaucratic monster of collective human consciousness, as indicated by many people flocking around the changed princess in the Piscian waters, unconscious of the danger of becoming devoured. Vasari is known for his bibliographical book, "Lives of the Artists."

Alpheratz is one of four stars of the Great Square of Pegasus and is part of Andromeda and Pegasus both. As Alpha Andromeda, it is the head of the princess in chains. By its alternative name Sirrah, it is Delta Pegasus.

Alpheratz is unadulterated, innocent, naive, uncorrupted by evil, wrong-doing or malice; and holds a position of extraordinary honor and advantage--this star often portending success and riches through social popularity and achievement in business.

Although the stage setting in which Andromeda is trapped (chained to rocks about to be devoured by Cetus) seems complex, two primary things must occur for her freedom. One is an inner metamorphosis, a psycho-emotional maturing into the readiness to receive aid, the other is the assistance from her destined partner, who also had to mature through his own initiatory rite. The two go hand in hand.

Often time, we are ready to change only when in the chains of the human struggle. And our inner readiness precedes receiving support to change. Forceful attempts to break free before we are ready only tighten the chain of bondage. Here lies our need to break free from the human mold, from the genetic, cultural, and personal pattering forming our lives. Andromeda represents the struggle for freedom from the collective and tormenting forces of the psycho-emotional human world, to claim our true galactic birthright and evolutionary destiny. Alpheratz's fortuitous position ultimately brings success and reward in this worthy pursuit.

Alignments with Alpheratz can indicate being caught in the power plays unconsciously created by the arrogance or denials of others. Alpheratz can also indicate our vulnerability to the emotional and psychic delusions of others, especially those in our genealogical line or karmic past--often manifesting as elaborate emotional dramatics. Alpheratz asks us to get un-entangled from the human psycho-emotional drama, or accept a sentence of bondage not rightfully ours.

Alderamin is the head of king Cepheus, often portraying one in an authoritative position. Alderamin can expresses as denial, avoidance, or turning one's head from dealing with the manipulative power plays causing our or other people's entrapment, and the unwillingness to do anything about them. Here we can live in submission to manipulative forces rather than to stand up for self and for those unjustly punished, even when it is our responsibility to do so. Alderamin ultimately comes to aid, but often after an initial aloofness. Alpheratz and Alderamin amalgamate to form a fortunate outcome, but sometimes drawn out through the emotional Piscean waters. (The story of Andromeda, Perseus and Royal Family)

At this birth point in the lunar cycle, we are asked to address any entrapping issues and perhaps set something right or free; perhaps related to bitterness of the heart (Gianfar). In the context of our lunar cycle theme, creating this freedom is essential for our emergence or migration, to make the move into a more fitting environment, whether consciously or physically.

Sun Orcus

The Sun and Orcus conjoin on Aug 21-22 in early sidereal Leo aligned with Regulus, the Heart of the Lion (just as Mercury and Venus also conjoin). This marks the mid-point of vision and realization in the current 366-day Earth-Orcus synodic cycle theme, presented in the Feb 6, 2008 Lunar Planner.

Orcus is associated with living true to our "soul oaths." This specific Orcus synodic theme is about the emergence of a new form of leadership and breaking trail in our lives for the benefit of our personal freedom and the freedom of others. This Sun-Orcus alignment occurring on Aug 21-22 brings realization about what this Orcus cycle means in our lives--about living true to self and individual purpose.

Last Quarter Moon Phase Characteristics

Time for Change

Last Quarter Moon

The Last Quarter Moon creates our "inner need to initiate change" in the lunar cycle as we move into the cycle's last and transitional quarter.

The Pleiades

The Pleiades star cluster

Our Last Quarter Moon occurs on August 23 in early sidereal Taurus, it lies just past the Pleiades star cluster and conjoins Atkis, the foot of Perseus, and Mirphak, the primary star of Perseus; and also Quasar 3C110 of Eridanus, upon the River of Life.

Mirphak, a fortuitous star, embodies the totality and success of all that Perseus has been through in his initiatory trials with need to now live his destiny.

The foot of Perseus (created by Atiks, Omi Perseus; Zeta Perseus; and the intense neutron star, X–Perseus) brings a powerful capacity to infuse the spiritual power gained from our initiations in life and to manifest our longer-term purpose and destiny in the physical world.

Here we are asked to claim the true gift of the inner refinement that the past initiatory fires of life have catalyzed, and to accept that our trials had to precede stepping forth into our greater fulfillment and destiny. We are now motivated to make the changes in our lives that reflect our new level of inner refinement and find the power to do so.

Also adding to this theme is Quasar 3C110 of Eridanus, the River of Life. Eridanus is of the soul’s evolutionary journey through incarnate life. Eridanus is a very long constellation, winding its way from Orion (in late sidereal Taurus), backward in the ecliptic (east to west), through Aries where it reversing direction twice, then into Pisces and completing its journey in sidereal Aquarius. The stars of Eridanus reveal the nature of the trials and rewards found throughout life’s winding sojourn. Quasar 3C110 of inspires us to apply a laser like focus to mold what appears to be a physical barrier into the means to accomplish our greater vision.

The Venus-Mars Synodic Cycle

Venus and Mars begin a new 350-day synodic cycle on August 24 in late sidereal Virgo. Conjoining from the souther heavens is Eta Carina and the Key Hole Nebula NGC 3372 in Argo Navis

Eta Carina is Lord of the Waves (the Akkadian Ea (Ia), the Sumerian Enki, chief god of the city Eridhu--he who warned Noah), generally is considered the foreteller of impending catastrophe, but also the instructor of the way through such evolutionary transitions. Eta is also associated with the Sirian amphibious fish-man "Oannes," who taught the Chaldaeans, both esoteric science and that which would civilize their lives, from building cities and temples to agricultural technique. (Robert Temple, "The Sirius Mystery" / Blavatsky, "Isis Unveiled") Eta embodies the esoteric Theosophical Gnostic wisdom behind what to most is merely the mystery of life or unfathomable acts of God. Oannes is the emblem of priestly, esoteric wisdom; he comes out from the sea, because the 'great deep', the water, typifies...the secret doctrine." (Blavatsky, "Isis Unveiled")

From an Earthian perspective, Eta Carina is the most luminous, massive, and energetic star known in our galaxy--estimated to be 100 times the mass of our Sun, and to radiate five million times more energy than our Sun. A gas shell surrounding Eta extends 4000 times the size of our solar system. Eta is highly unstable and prone to violent outbursts. Eta was seen to erupt in 1840 A.D., then making it the second brightest star in the sky. Eta recently doubled its X-ray emissions in a four-month period sometime between 1992 to 1994, indicating an intensified influence of the Eta Carina theme. Eta then doubled in brightness in 1998--perhaps Eta's warnings. Because of Eta’s strong X-ray spectrum and galactic equatorial orientation, it expresses significantly at the soul level--stimulating an awakening on Earth to our greater purpose as sentient souls responsible for Earth's safe evolutionary outcome. Current observations indicate that Eta Carinae remains highly unstable and may explode as a supernova at any time!

Simply, this Venus-Mars Eta Carina synod provides a warning regarding our need to integrate Venus (Heart) and Mars (use of our creative power) or the ramifications may be extreme. This entire 350-day cycle may continue to produce such warnings, perhaps ones hard to ignore, and provides dramatic inspiration to get clear on this essentiality.

See this Month's Lunar Calendar for exact aspect times; or the Lunar Cycle Timing Chart, found under resources on the Planetary Bio-Harmonic web page.

The Vesta-Eris Synodic Cycle

The asteroid Vesta and Eris, a recently discovered and significant dwarf planet, start a new synodic cycle in late sidereal Pisces. Vesta is of clarity, focus and dedication to purpose, while Eris is the great disrupter, but which eventually leads to the establishment of a new order.

The two conjoin Revati of Pisces and Baten Kaitos of Cetus. Revati is of money and finance, the wealth of the human world. Baten Kaitos is the belly of the technobureaucratic monster of collective human consciousness, the whale of human experience, the wet, sensual, and emotional world of human affairs in which we mature and transform.

This several-year synodic cycle may initiate a disruption of our existing focus regarding money and finance in the world, and perhaps of the technobureaucratic monster itself, but which will lead to a greater clarity, focus and responsible use of resources. This cycle continues through mid-2012.

Balsamic Moon Phase Characteristics

Focus to the Future

Balsamic Moon

The Balsamic Moon marks the time in lunar cycle when we coalesce the experience of the lunar cycle into its seed essence, which will then sprout through the theme of the following lunar cycle. It is when we turn our attention from this lunar cycle in anticipation of the next to come. The hours before the Balsamic Moon provide our time of coalescence while those after mark the time when we turn 180° from looking back over the past cycle and look forward toward the next cycle to come.

The Temple of Castor and Pollux

The ruins of the Temple of Castor and Pollux in the Forum Romanum was orginally constructed / finished in 484 BC. In republican times the temple served as a meeting place for the Roman Senate, and from the middle of the 2nd century BC the front of the podium served as a speaker's platform. During the imperial period the temple housed the office for weights and measures, and was a depository for the State treasury. (Wikipedia) --fitting to Gemini.

The Balsamic Moon occurs on August 27 in late in sidereal Gemini conjoining Castor and Wasat.

The role of the Gemini Twins is of partnership in mutual cooperation participating in the human world, one of linking and uniting the mission of the soul (galactic plane) into and through our daily affairs in the world. The Twins work hand-in-hand for the betterment and evolutionary fulfillment of humankind. And of course, Gemini is of communication, commerce, and activity. Gemini is of high intensity intellectual communication, knowledge, information, goods and services, and their exchange.

Although the Twins are of communication and human betterment, they have in some legend been at odds with each other, a bit argumentative. Here is the Gemini trait of competitiveness, debate, arbitration, and negotiation, but ultimately leading to agreement and solution.

Astrologically, Castor is the liaison and is of partnerships and cooperation. Castor brings resources and people together that serve to get logistics accomplished in the daily world of business and commerce; whereas nearby Pollux is more of the ambassador and counselor, bringing a greater awareness to the efforts of Castor, and uniting individuals, groups and factions with concern for the greater evolutionary fulfillment of all parties.

Conjoining Wasat from the south is Muliphen (Mirza) of Canis Major inspiring people, partners, and soul mates that have disappeared or withdrawn to re-emerge as a steady and dependable presence. Also conjoining is Delta Monoceris, a star of the Unicorn, bringing its unexpected magic with the arrival of and union with the unexpected.

Public Relations and liaison articulates the nature of the Twins--linking individuals together in larger groups or organizations that can serve a purpose far greater than the separate parties can accomplish alone. Here we find motivation for the coordination and exchange of resources and information between individuals and groups, and the planning of more encompassing joint ventures.

This defines the nature of our coalescing seed of this lunar cycle that will sprout anew on the New Moon to come. Our next lunar cycle occurs in the midst of sidereal Leo, which starts on the New Moon of August 30, 2008. It will be about the use of our individuality and personal will in the world. More to come then.
