Introduction: The Mars Retrograde

Geocentric Star Chart animation showing the 2016 Mars Retrograde. (You can pause the video and drag the progress bar to view any section of the video.)

Completion of the Mars retrograde and the Mars-Saturn conjunction act as a stimulus to action as we enter the last quarters of the Saturn-Neptune 36.4-year cycle and the last quarter of the Jupiter-Saturn 20-year cycle, a time to initiate change in those cycles—in the sociopolitical structures in the world and in the modalities of our personal lives that are based upon antiquated ideologies.

Mars began its retrograde on April 17, 2016 upon the foot of Ophiuchus and conjoining Antares, Heart of the Scorpion. Mars retrogrades back through the head and chelae of the Scorpion and completes its retrograde on June 29. It them moves toward its conjunction with Saturn and Antares, occurring on August 24. The time from the direct station (June 29) through the Mars-Saturn conjuntion (August 24) is a time to begin to implement how we have redefined our creative motive (throughout the retrograde), and at the Mars-Saturn conjunction, to then ground our creative impetus into demonstrable concretized form.

The completion of both Juno (on June 22) and Mars retrogrades will be felt as a welcomed sense of movement and progression in creative action and in our relationships and partnerships of all types, those personal and those of business and politics.

Juno's direct station fully engages the new Earth-Juno synodic cycle that began on April 27 conjoining the stars of the Southern Cross and those of the Northern Crown, also the Centaurus-A Galaxy..., presented in the April 7, 2016 Lunar Planner.

Excerpt: This new Juno synodic cycle offers a fresh start for relationships of all types, those personal and intimate, those of a professional nature, and those between nations of the world, especially those involving covenants, commitments and agreements. It provides opportunity to claim far greater freedom and fulfillment in our existing relations, or through the establishment of new relations, that can free us from entrapping patterns of the past.

The retrogrades of Mars, in general, provide a time to explore and redefine how we are using our creative initiative and our autonomic response. Every retrograde of Mars (or any planet) is however unique, depending upon several factors, but primarily due to the stellar energetics in which the retrograde occurs.

Mars is an expressive and initiating creative force. Mars is of sexuality, vitality, life force, and power. In its mature expression, Mars stimulates our capacity to respond in assertive action. It is of leadership, self reliance, and victorious. It is audacious, brave, instinctual, passionate and willful. For the less mature, or when poorly placed in a chart, Mars can express as the awry or ballistic use of power, lack of self-control, abuse in all if its forms, and with selfish motive and greed that is based in the fear of not surviving or not being provided for. The Mars aspect of self (sacrum, base chakra, adrenals sexual organs) is the area generally held in most judgment by many people—due to this force having been used destructively and manipulatively in the history of the solar system resulting in aberrations and devastation of life; hence often dubbed the planet of war. Because of this, total rejection and lack of love is often projected toward the Mars quality / base chakra of self—alienating it even more.

The new Earth-Mars synodic cycle begins during the midst of the Mars retrograde. The stars conjoining the Sun-Earth-Mars alignment (Mars synod) set the energetic and reveal the theme for the new Mars 780-day synodic cycle, which continues into July of 2018. This Mars synod conjoins the Head of the Scorpion, making this retrograde and the new Mars cycle extra-potent and especially significant.

Ophiuchus (standing over the Scorpion) teaches us to realize that power is not something outside of self and that gaining it is not by attempting to control our external world and the people in it, but is through the art of self-mastery to claim the power within self. This requires an inversion in consciousness from being a victim of our life experience to being a creator of it. This flip in consciousness is not merely attained by changing how we think, although that can open the path to it. It is the result of doing the inner work, physiologically, emotionally and mentally, that changes our vibrational resonance. See Emotional Tone Scale History & Healing.

Saturn's retrograde in this area of the heavens provides opportunity to address long-established solidified psychophysiological patterns within self and the resultant manifest conditions in our lives that result from them. Psychophysiological patterns include neurological function, cellular imprints, their emotional charge and our resultant beliefs.

The retrogrades of both Mars and Saturn in this area of the heavens bring us to realize the dire ramifications of forcibly attempting to change our external life experiences, but to realize the means to effect change is by first changing the source of those manifestations, our inner vibrational resonance, which in turn coalesces the assemblage our material experience.

Mars and Saturn both, especially in this area of the heavens (sidereal Scorpio), resonate with our autonomic neurological process (the reptilian part or our brains / brain stem), which controls our automatic behavioral survival responses. These are deep-seated behavioral patterns common to all of us, which have long-standing momentum, and thus are not trivial to change. Nonetheless, this is the area of ourselves that Mars and Saturn currently invites us to address. However, we are not left without help in this process. Jupiter, also retrograde (in its square to Saturn and opposition to Chiron, conjoining the Lunar Nodes), impels an inward expansion of our neocortex, the part of our brain that enables our ability to think independently and to aspire for the greater evolutionary wellbeing of all life, beyond our reactive primal and emotional responses. Chiron on the South Lunar Node impels us to delve deep within self to get in touch with deep-seated wounds that perpetuate our behavioral conditions and to use those very wounds as the elixir the heals, and to apply that inner healing to mobilize the expansion of our consciousness.

The 2016 Mars retrograde and the new Mars synodic cycle are a part of and augment the Saturn-Neptune square of 2015-2016, which begins the last quarter of the Saturn-Neptune 36.4-year synodic cycle that began in 1989, and the Jupiter-Saturn square, which begins the last quarter of the of the 20-year Jupiter-Saturn and leads into the climatic Jupiter-Saturn-Pluto conjunctions and their compounded synods with Ceres and Pallas occurring in 2020 (all square Eris)—presented in the article: Sociopolitical & Personal Explorations 2016-2020. These events also occur along with the extremely significant and unprecedented Uranus-Eris conjunction opposite Haumea of 2016-2017, which just began—presented in the companion article: New Frontiers in Consciousness: Uranus-Eris opposite Haumea 2016-2017.

The New Mars 780-day Synodic Cycle

The new Earth-Mars synodic cycle began during the midst of the Mars retrograde on May 22, conjoining the Full Moon of the May 6, 2016 Lunar Cycle. This cycle fully engages when Mars completes its retrograde on June 29. The stars conjoining Mars synod set the energetic and reveal the theme for the new Mars 780-day synodic cycle.

The Full Moon Mars Synod conjoins Dschuba and Graffias of Scorpio, which mark the Head of the Scorpion; Yed of Ophiuchus and the stars forming the left leg of Ophiuchus, Kornephorus and Kajam of Hercules; Gamma Lupus and Alpha Circini.

Ophiuchus stands over the Scorpion with his left foot upon the Scorpion's head, marked by the stars Dschuba (the Tree of Light / Life) and Graffias (Beta Scorpio), both of earlier Scorpio and the only part of Scorpion that crosses the ecliptic.

Dschuba impels a graduation in consciousness, moving from our repetitive patterns in life that perpetuate an experience of entrapment and a sense of victim consciousness (entrapped in the clutches of the Scorpion / scales of Libra), to taking personal responsibility for co-creating our reality and evolving out of the patterns of the past. Dschuba impels us to become responsible creators of our lives.

Yed, the hand of Ophiuchus, conjoins the Head of the Scorpion. Ophiuchus is a demonstrable exemplar of one who has attained self-mastery over the raw creative forces of life. Yed, the hand of death, does not refer to a dark sinister force out for our demise, but it does reveal that something must die—an entire modality of being, the personality-level egoic self-importance facade justifying our life experience as if we are victims of life so we can participate from the maturity of a soul-awakened being, responsible for our experience, our actions, and their results. Nearby Han, the left knee of Ophiuchus, and the stars forming the left leg of Ophiuchus, articulate the actualization of this transmutational process. They impel us to actively create a new stance in life based from this level of soul-awareness and self-mastery.

In our stellar image, the Centaur, lying below Libra and the Scorpion, is slaying the wild beast (Thēríon, now the Latin Lupus) with conscious deliberation in preparation for a ceremony upon Ara, the sacrificial altar. This image articulates the conscious decision and demonstrable action to sacrifice lower-order bestial or hedonist self, the egoic part of self that fights to survive. The term sacrifice, as used here, means to give up a lower office for one higher, and in this case, for a higher stage of evolution. This is about slaying that which we at one time protected, egoic self, to gain a greater freedom, illumined self.

Also conjoining from the southern heavens is the Chameleon, generally a symbol of adaptability, change and new beginnings. The Chameleon articulates the ability to adjust to any situation, but not through subservience or acquiescence, but in mastery of self and with intuitive sensitivity and individuality.

In essence, we are presented an opportunity to graduate into a new level of self-realization. In this process, we become aware that we create our experience and are responsible for the life scenarios in which we find ourselves. We shift from feeling helpless, even justifying why we are entrapped as if victims of life placing blame outside of self, into a greater maturity and wisdom. We learn to express mastery over the dualistic forces that were once entrapping, even destructive, living from our greater soul wisdom in unity consciousness (exemplified by Ophiuchus standing over the Scorpion). Here we are impelled to become fully self-aware and self-responsible, with the ability to use and direct the creative forces of life and define our own evolutionary destiny. This new Mars cycle impels us to responsibly and masterfully use our creative power in a leadership capacity to create our destiny rather than to fight in a survival mode mentality against the forces of life.

Valles Marineris, the "Grand Canyon of Mars"

Soaring high above Valles Marineris, the "Grand Canyon of Mars," viewers look down and catch a sight resembling parts of the desert West of the United States, but on a vastly greater scale. Here the canyon averages over a hundred miles wide, and its floor is heaped with rocks, sediments, and landslide debris. Within the canyon walls lie possibly hundreds of layers filling many pages of Mars' geologic record. Image & Caption Credit: NASA/JPL/University of Arizona.

Biological implications

This Mars retrograde and new Mars cycle impel us to shift octaves in three interrelated biological areas, the thyroid, liver and root chakra. The thyroid, an iodine organ, provides our means to metabolize experience, rather than judging experience, which only builds calcified emotional patterns of resentment and anger. When refined, we express truth clearly and calmly without judgment. The thyroid is a part of the throat chakra. Our neck musculature is about appropriateness. Are we living a lie to protect or condemn others, or living truth and allowing others to live theirs? The thyroid is directly reflexed to the liver, which is an iron organ, as is our blood, the element of strength and stamina. Our liver is our source of action, will and power. How are we directing the expression of our willpower? Our root chakra connects us to Earth. It is fundamental to our impulse for survival. When ungrounded we are lost, acting awry, we wither and die. To ground self, invoke and bring souls golden light downward throughout the entire body to root chakra and into Earth, clearing away emotional blockages and their resultant mental and behavioral issues along the way. Mars retrograde provides an ideal time to purify our own blood rather than lashing out with vengeance to shed the blood of others (literally or metaphorically).

Mars and Earth also approach their closest distance during their orbits at the time of the Mars synod. This specific Mars approach creates an especially strong resonance with Earth's Schumann fundamental resonance, pointed out to me by my friend Shine Richards, also augmenting the significance of this synod and the new Earth-Mars cycle. In Shine's words: "Which says to me that this cycle of Mars places sweeping strong Alpha, Theta, Delta harmonic couplings to biologic lifeforms situated within the Van Allen, Schumann Resonant energy fields of the Earth." See: Inter-planetary Wave Coupling Resonances.

The New Saturn Synodic Cycle

May 6, 2016 Lunar Planner Excerpt

Following the Balsamic Moon of the May 6, 2016 lunar cycle was the Sun-Earth-Saturn alignment occurring on June 2, which began the new 378-day Earth-Saturn synodic cycle. The synod occurred in sidereal Scorpio and in the constellation of Ophiuchus. Influencing stars include Ras Algethi and Sarin of Hercules; Restaban of Draco; and the Gobular Cluster of M10 Opiuchus. Also conjoining is The Great Attractor, which lies south of the ecliptic along the galactic plane. It, Rastaban and M10 are the primary conjoining entries.

Saturn by Cassini

Saturn is of structure, form and time. Saturn's force tends to solidify and concretize, to halt that which is moving. Saturn is slow and methodical. It imparts a need to be responsible, accountable, dependable and stable. Saturn also forces us to confront our fears and address our karmic issues.

Saturn, in its clear and evolved expression, impels us to create a solid foundation and stability in our lives. It brings the capacity for concentration and moderation and the ability to apply past principles and knowledge constructively. Saturn instills confidence in one's knowledge; and honors family and soul heritage.

Saturn in its diminished expression can be controlling, wanting to own others and dictate behavior for them. It can be oppressive, righteous and jealous; fearful of casual intimacy, touching and embracing, which instead must be controlled. It can produce an inability to be self-responsible and own up to life experience as being one's own creation; thus resulting in victim consciousness where we blame life or others for our life experience. It can express a denial or avoidance of genetic and family heritage. It can produce an inability to ground, concretize and structure life; or produce difficulty with physical things, as well as well as with structure, organizations, legalities, and bureaucracies. More about Saturn and Saturn's cycles.

Hercules stands upside down in the northern Heavens, north above Ophiuchus, with his feet (foundation) in the realm of the gods (the celestial dome), and with his head and hands at work in the realm of humankind, aiding those in the incarnate world struggling to claim their freedom from perpetuated mortal entrapment.

Ras Algethi is the lucida (brightest star) of this constellation and marks the head of Hercules. Ras Algethi embodies the wisdom of Hercules (derived partly from his heavenly heritage and partly from his challenging Earthian experience) and contributes significantly to the Ophiuchus / Scorpio theme. Hercules is one seeded from another realm but who is intimately aware of the human dilemma, the struggle and its cause (the alchemical amalgamation of those from the heavens with those of the Earth). His beauty and intelligence he gains from Alcmene his mother and his wisdom of evolutionary matters along with his shrewd sagacity he gains from Zeus is father. The motivation behind his undaunted and bold actions expresses from experiencing the human struggle and knowing the heavenly freedom possible. His presence upon the incarnational plane is of a service capacity, a mission of evolutionary proportion—to ensure our evolutionary freedom both personally and for all souls on Earth.

Also conjoining is Sarin, the left shoulder of Hercules. Similar to Kornephoros, Sarin imparts a sense of strength and responsibility, in this case to aid others by helping to open the way for them to move forward when they cannot on their own accord. These stars also impart a relentless inner drive to impel others to claim their self-mastery and freedom from the dominion of others, and to awaken from acquiescing to false beliefs placed upon them. A lesson common here is to learn that you cannot help those who do not wish to help themselves, and that it is though helping others that we help ourselves—often a paradox for those with alignments here.

Further North is the head of the Dragon. Restaban (Beta) and Etamin (Gamma) of Draco create the eyes of the Dragon, although shown on the head in the side profile of modern illustrations. Draco is the constellation that encircles and guards the northern pole of our ecliptic. Both stars are of a high administrative order overseeing the initiations of the incarnate soul. They lie north of and express through Hercules and Ophiuchus.

Restaban expresses between the Head of Hercules (Ras Algethi) and the Heart of the Scorpion (Antares) into sidereal Scorpio, also conjoining the left shoulder of Ophiuchus (Kappa) and Tau Scorpio. Etamin expresses just into sidereal Sagittarius and oversees the heart center of our Galaxy (Galactic Center). Classically both stars are considered malefic. However, I suggest this is a function of one’s resonance and intent. Dragon despises human’s destructive tendencies, besides, not everyone can befriend a dragon.

Restaban opens portals and pathways in the physical world for those who have truly embraced and mastered their initiations in life, who have aligned with the path of soul rather than the convenient path of personality—as our Hercules exemplifies—opportunities that are otherwise blocked to those who have not claimed their self-mastery and demonstrated their self-responsibility in applying that mastery in a service capacity to others.

A Supercluster of galaxies called The Great Attractor (GA) lies between the ecliptical longitudes of Restaban of Draco and Ras Algethi of Hercules, but lies along the galactic plane, about 29° south of the ecliptic, conjoining the Saturn synod within a degree. The Great Attractor complements the nature of Ras Algethi of Hercules, Restaban of Draco and the Heart of Ophiuchus.

The GA is near the direction in space that our local group of galaxies is seemingly being pulled. The GA has been known about since the mid-80s. Since then however, and due to deeper-looking survey instruments, the Shapley Supercluster (SSC) of galaxies was found beyond the GA, a far greater attractive mass, which is a group of about 17 galactic clusters. The Great Attractor was thus revealed to have about one tenth the mass originally attributed to it. The Shapley Supercluster is the most massive structure (so far found) topping the list of about 220 known superclusters. So it is more like our local group of galaxies is being pulled past the GA toward the Shapley Supercluster. Although the SSC is behind the GA, the SSC, as viewed from our solar system, falls into early sidereal Libra, a different zodiakal longitude than the GA, which falls into sidereal Scorpio. Both are astrologically significant of course.

Astrologically, the Great Attractor pulls us toward a new way of being, past our limiting human mold, opening the way to a greater super-consciousness, to greater possibilities of being. It provides a unique perspective from outside our galactic space of what is not commonly seen. Significant alignments with it can impel an ability to travel in a space-time warp with the capacity to see behind or through the apparent solidified realm of matter. From a personality perspective, one with significant GA alignments might seem to be coming and going at the same time. It produces a mysteriously seductive and magnetic character (fitting to sidereal Scorpio/Ophiuchus), luring us into the future.

Local Superclusters

This is the first Earth-Saturn synod occurring as we enter the last quarter of the Jupiter-Saturn 20-year cycle. As we enter the last quarter of Jupiter-Saturn cycle, we come to realize that the existing sociopolitical structures we have created no long serve but now restrict the movement and expansion of consciousness Jupiter impels, thus arousing the need to begin to change those structures and their imposing limitations.

This first Earth-Saturn cycle (like the first Earth-Jupiter cycle) occurring in the last quarter of 20-year Jupiter-Saturn cycle augments how the energetic of the Jupiter-Saturn square expresses on Earth. This cycle impels us to begin to change sociopolitical structures in ways that support the freedom and self-empowerment of the people, sociopolitical systems that are in service to rather than those that dominate and control. It also impels us to change the constructs of our personal lives that serve our greater freedom and wellbeing, and that of others. The future beckons.

The New Mars-Saturn Synodic Cycle

In addition to the Earth-Mars 780-day cycle and the Earth-Saturn 378-day cycle, Mars and Saturn also begin a new cycle, occurring at the time of the Mars-Saturn synod (Sun-Mars-Saturn alignment). This occurs on June 9, 2016 producing a 2-year cycle. This cycle completes on June 9, 2018.

The cycle starting on June 9, 2018 completes on June 1, 2020, and is a part of the Jupiter-Saturn-Pluto climatic confluence occuring then, presented in: Sociopolitical & Personal Explorations 2016-2020.

Heliocentirc Star Chart: Earth-Saturn and Mars-Saturn synods

The Mars-Saturn synod, also occurs with the same star alignments as the Earth-Saturn synod, thus with the same synodic cycle theme, now applied to the Mars-Saturn synthesis, expressing throughout the next two years.

Mars-Saturn & Antares

The current June 9, 2016 heliocentric Mars-Saturn synod expresses through one geocentric conjunction, which occurs after the Mars retrogade, on August 24 conjoining Antares and under the foot of Ophiuchus, shown in the above video.

Marking the center of sidereal Scorpio is Antares, Alpha Scorpio, Heart of the Scorpion. Antares is one of the "Four Royal Architects" along with Aldebaran, Regulus, and Fomalhaut, each in their respective quadrants of the sky. Antares, the 15th brightest star, is about 700 times the size of our Sun, and is one of the largest stars. It is quite elongated with a polar diameter about 63% of its equatorial diameter, red in color, said to rival Mars in brightness when they are seen together.

In classical astrology, Antares is the star of war and weaponry, and with expounded meaning, to challenge the established opposing politics (an arena common to the Antares / Aldebaran axis) with tenacious adamancy. This is especially in regard to taking a stand against the established conditions of our personal lives and against the established order or authority directing our lives when those conditions or that authority are no longer in our best interest nor supporting our evolutionary freedom and fulfillment.

However, it is only the less aware who mistake this power point in the ecliptic to mean fight against or destroy what one still perceives as opposing forces outside of self. Antares expresses as immanence for those who have embraced their initiations and claimed their self-empowerment, who have graduated from playing the victim in life to a predetermined fate, and who have learned to take responsibility for their experience and their destiny. The Heart of the Scorpion teaches us to realize the inseparable nature of life, to reconcile the forces within and without, those of life and death, to know of the oneness and inseparable permeability of the Creation Force—as is exemplified by Ophiuchus standing over Antares, articulating the higher octave of sidereal Scorpio. In this awareness, Antares becomes a responsible protector of life and “takes a stand” for wholeness, and demonstrably and passionately lives it.

This placement of the Mars-Saturn conjunction with Antares is also Saturn's heliocentric location at the time of the Saturn-Neptune heliocentric square occuring on January 29, 2016, which marked entry into the last quarter of our current Saturn-Neptune 36.4-year synodic cycle that began in 1989 and continues through 2025, arousing an "inner impetus to create change" in that cycle.

The additional stellar qualities synthesizing with Antares and nesting between the leges of Ophiuchus are presented in more detail in the Saturn-Neptune Square section in the Sociopolitical & Personal Explorations 2016-2020 article.

Our Mars-Saturn geocentric conjunction with Antares, occuring in the start of the last quarter of the Saturn-Neptune cycle, in the start of the new Earth and Mars cycles with each other and with Saturn, and after the Mars Retrograde, are an initiatory test. As said, Mars and Saturn aligning with the Antares-Aldebaran axis especially express into political arena and arouse revolutionary responses, and in this area of the zodiak in general (mid sidereal Scorpio), they arouse fundamental primal and carnal impulsive reptilian brain (survival) bioenergetics. Issues about the use of power and authoritarian control are especially emphasized. Mars is of externalized expression and wants to create. Saturn wants to compress and solidify into concretized form. This synthesis supports us to use our energy constructively with conscious and responsible consideration for its long-term ramifications. So, how will we now apply the creative force of Mars in the world and in our personal lives? At a personal level this is very much dependent upon the inner growth and changes we have made within self throughout the Mars retrograde.

The Saturn-Neptune square, which marks the several-month transition into the last quarter of the 36.4-year Saturn-Neptune cycle (continuing through September), is especially highlighted in the lunar months of August and September 2016. In August, we approach the second of three geocentric squares as Mars makes passage over the Head of the Scorpion to conjoin with Saturn and Antares, the Heart of the Scorpion, which lies under the auspices of Ophiuchus holding the Serpent reaching for the Northern Crown, a mythical image that articulates attaining freedom from the reincarnational entrapment into the chelae of the Scorpion. This also occurs as Saturn stations to complete its retrograde. The Saturn-Neptune square creates a T-square with Lunar Nodes, as Neptune approaches the South Lunar Node creating an intense stimulus to the Mars-Saturn-Antares conjunction, occurring on the Last Quarter Moon (August 24-25) as well as bringing this energetic to its climax.

Our transition into the last quarter of the 36.4-year Saturn-Neptune cycle impels us to relinquish antiquated ideologies and the solidifications, constructs and behavioral patterns within self and in society we had built around those ideologies, those which we may have come to identify ourselves with, but that have now served their purpose and limit the manifestation of not only our greater dreams and visions, but limit awakening as illumined self-aware and self-empowered souls beyond the veils of illusion we have acquiesced to. Saturn-Antares teaches us about the limits we have placed upon our own power, and here it tells us the power is within to change our own self imposed limits. As Mars moves to join Saturn, Saturn wants to control, to fix or put a hex on Mars, which is our creative force. For those less willing to relinquish false illusory ideals and to embrace the power within self rather than giving that power away, the Mars-Saturn-Antares T-square with Neptune and Lunar Nodes can incite extreme behavior to fight and control to a climax, both by authoritarian factions usurping the life force of the unawakened, as well as by those taking a revolutionary stand against authoritarian rule.
